How to Build a Skincare Routine That Works for You
A thoughtful, simple approach to choosing your essentials, layering them in the right order and adjusting as your skin’s needs change.

The beauty industry loves a 10-step routine, but -trust me- your skin barrier prefers a quieter approach. When a vanity is overcrowded with overlapping acids, redundant serums, and viral impulse buys, it becomes impossible to tell what is actually working and what is quietly triggering irritation or congestion.
Building an effective routine isn’t about following outdated textbook rules or copying someone else’s shelf. It is about locking in a smart foundation, introducing targeted actives with intention, and listening to what your skin actually needs.
1. Anchor Your Routine in the Core Three
Forget the standard "cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen" triad that leaves so many complexions congested. A modern, high-performing baseline relies on four strategic essentials:
- A Gentle Morning Cleanser: Skip harsh stripping foams, but don’t skip morning cleansing entirely. Using a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser in the morning refreshes the skin, removes overnight sweat and nighttime product residue, and creates a clean canvas for the day. My favorites are the Prequel Gleanser and La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Facial Cleanser (both options are under $20).
- A Cleansing Balm or Oil (PM): Water-based cleansers alone rarely break down tenacious modern sunscreens, makeup, and daily grime. Starting your evening routine with an emulsifying balm or oil dissolves pore-clogging debris effortlessly without scrubbing or tugging at your skin. My favorite are the Prequel Pre-Gleanse Cleansing Oil and the Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm.
- A Plumping, Barrier-Supportive Serum: Instead of relying on a moisturizer, anchor your daily hydration in a lightweight, peptide-based serum. Peptides support skin bounce, elasticity, and barrier integrity without suffocating your pores. My absolute favorite (and incredibly affordable is the COSRX 6X Peptide Collagen Skin Booster and the SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule.
- Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF: Sunscreen is your ultimate preservation step. Whether you love a non-tinted mineral formula or a weightless fluid, choose a texture you genuinely enjoy wearing every single morning.
- Editor’s Note: Not everyone needs a moisturizer in the morning. Most modern sunscreens are formulated with enough hydrating base ingredients to stand completely on their own. For many skin types, layering a dedicated moisturizer underneath SPF is a fast track to congestion, midday shine, and frustrating pilling.
2. Introduce Targeted Actives—One at a Time
Once your baseline routine feels comfortable and predictable for at least two weeks, you can address specific concerns. The golden rule here is restraint: introduce only one new active at a time so you can accurately gauge your skin’s tolerance.
- For Fine Lines and Cellular Turnover: A nighttime retinoid remains the gold standard for long-term structural support and smoother texture.
- For Redness, Uneven Tone, and Blemishes: Multitaskers like azelaic acid and niacinamide calm inflammation, refine pores, and visibly brighten discoloration without dismantling your barrier.
- For Morning Environmental Defense: Applying an antioxidant serum before your SPF neutralizes free radicals and supercharges your UV protection. While Vitamin C is traditionally hailed as the gold standard, its low pH and instability make it a notorious trigger for irritation, redness, and breakouts. If your skin doesn’t tolerate Vitamin C, CoQ10 (Ubiquinone) is the ultimate alternative. Naturally present in human cells, CoQ10 energizes cellular repair, prevents UV-induced collagen breakdown, and defends against oxidative stress—all in a gentle, bio-identical form that never stings or compromises your barrier. My favorire CoQ10 serum is the Timeless Coenzyme Q10 Antioxidant Serum (under $30).
3. Master the Order of Application
Layering skincare doesn’t require a chemistry degree—simply follow the rule of thinnest to thickest consistency. Water-based formulas penetrate best on clean skin, while richer creams belong at the end to lock everything in.
- Morning Flow: Cleanser (or water rinse) → Antioxidant Serum (CoQ10) and/or Peptide Serum → Sunscreen.
- Evening Flow: Cleansing balm or oil followed by a gentle cleanser → Peptide Serum or Targeted Night Active (Retinoid) → Barrier-Restoring Night Moisturizer.
Editor’s Tip: Hydrating serums love a slightly moist canvas, applying them to damp skin will improve penetration. However, do not attempt to do the same with your retinoid: it will just cause irritation that takes days to subside.
4. Edit as Your Skin Evolves
A truly great routine is never static. Your skin’s needs will naturally fluctuate with seasonal humidity, travel, stress, and hormonal cycles. Instead of forcing the same lineup year-round, treat your skincare like a capsule wardrobe.
When heat and humidity climb, swap rich creams for lighter emulsions. If your complexion suddenly feels tight, reactive, or sensitized, pause your evening actives for a few nights and lean exclusively on your gentle cleanser and recovery cream.
When you strip away the noise, skincare is remarkably uncomplicated: protect in the morning, repair at night, and never force a step your skin didn’t ask for.
